Tottenham travel to Marseille in their final Champions League group game on Tuesday night needing to avoid defeat in order to seal their place in the last 16 of the competition.
Spurs thought they had sealed progress to the knockout stages when Harry Kane netted deep in added time at home to Sporting Lisbon last Wednesday, but the England striker’s effort was ruled out for a marginal offside following a lengthy VAR check and Antonio Conte’s side had to settle for a 1-1 draw.
That leaves Tottenham requiring at least a point to advance on Tuesday, with all four teams in Group D still able to qualify for the last 16. As things stand, Spurs sit top of the sector with eight points, followed by Sporting and Eintracht Frankfurt on seven. Marseille are currently bottom with six.
Defeat at the Stade Velodrome would see Tottenham overtaken by the Ligue 1 outfit, while one of Sporting or Eintracht would also move above Conte’s side. If Spurs lose in France, a draw in the group’s other match would see Sporting displace them in second, with Eintracht needing a win in Lisbon to advance.
If Tottenham draw in Marseille, they will win Group D if the other match also ends level, but will finish as runners-up in the sector if there is a winner at the Jose Alvalade.
Conte is suspended following his protests in the game against Sporting, so assistant Cristian Stellini will take charge on Tuesday night and was also put forward for pre-match media duties on Monday. The Spurs boss has gone out of the Champions League in the group stages in three of his previous five campaigns and has never made it beyond the quarter-finals of the competition in his coaching career.
Tottenham beat Marseille 2-0 in their opening Champions League group game back in September, thanks to two late Richarlison goals at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski and Cristian Romero did not take part in training on Monday. The Brazil forward is not expected to take part on Tuesday after picking up an injury against former club Everton in mid-October, but the Swede and the Argentine could be involved in Marseille. Meanwhile, Eric Dier and Rodrigo Bentancur should return to the Spurs XI after starting Saturday’s 3-2 win at Bournemouth on the bench.
If Tottenham lose in France, they will finish third in Group D and drop down to the Europa League.
Marseille, meanwhile, let a two-goal lead slip in a 2-2 draw at Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on Saturday and OM have to beat Tottenham to make the Champions League last 16.
Defender Eric Bailly could return from a muscle injury to face Spurs. The French side are otherwise injury free ahead of Tuesday’s match.
